The UK Government has announced that dormant assets across the insurance and pensions, investment, wealth management and securities sectors are set to be unlocked, with the potential for more than £800 million to be made available to support the UK’s recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

Consumer finances at risk in Covid crisis
About 4,000 City firms are at a heightened risk of failure due to the Covid crisis, and nearly a third of those businesses could potentially harm consumers if they collapsed, according to the Financial Conduct Authority.

IDC expects worldwide shipments of used smartphones to increase by 9.2% in 2020. IDC also predicts that used smartphone shipments will reach 351.6 million units in 2024, with a compound annual growth rate of 11.2% from 2019 to 2024.

In 2020, UK retail sales suffered the biggest fall in 25 years as the closure of non-essential shops during lockdowns more than outweighed the online spending boom fuelled by Covid-19.

UK automotive looks to green recovery strategy
New car sales fell by 29% in 2020, with annual registrations dropping to 1,631,064 units, the lowest level since 1992, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. However sales of electric cars with battery and plug in hybrid vehicles increased by 10.7%.

Reforms to make it easier for leaseholders to buy homes
The Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government has announced that leaseholders in England are to be given the right to extend their leases by up to 990 years at zero ground rent. Traditionally used for flats but also applied to new builds, leasehold means the deedholder does not own their home outright and must usually pay an annual ground rent to the freeholder.
